The thirteen year old girl known only as Ace sat in her small, plain room in the building that held the government facility known as Project Cadmus. She stared out of the tiny window on the wall, a blank look on her face.
Ever since she had woken up and found herself back in Cadmus, she had taken solace in the memories she had of Batman helping her. He had shown her what a monster that The Joker really was, and had comforted her when she was dying, when he could have just killed her to stop the illusions that she was creating.
She hated this place. It was cold and dank. They would stick wires into her brain and force her to use her powers, and when they stopped, she went back to her room, where she would go to sleep and would have nightmares about it.
Whenever she could, Ace would try to send out a psychic message to Batman, the one person she trusted, in the hope that he would hear her and rescue her. The message was always the same,
"Batman, please help me. I'm scared."
Ace noticed that it was now dark, so she crawled under her hospital-like bed sheets and squeezed her eyes tightly shut, trying to get to sleep while hoping against hope that she did not have a nightmare this time.
Ace slowly drifted off, muttering to herself.
"It's okay, Batman will come for me…"
Little did Ace know that, while she slept, her subconscious was projecting out her message to Batman. It travelled further and louder when she was sleeping, which made that it was more likely that the message would get to the Dark Knight.
"Batman," her mind called out to her hero, "please help me. I'm scared."

Batman.
Man-Bat.
The Subconscious was a tricky place to work within, as was the world of genetics. You see a man clad in a Bat costume and you take two words, strung together, to make what is essentially your impression of that entity, but with so much convergent evolution of ideals around, it was bound to over lap at some point.
Minerva, both a mistress of violence and subterfuge held onto the tricks of the old ways. Since her "liberation" of the serum Kirk Langstrom had used to transform himself into the Man-Bat, she had since used it sparingly, linking it, through a procedure of ancient magic and science to her own blood.
The night had been long, slitting her wrists, and pouring small specks of the serum onto the Tantu totem. She was now bound to it, intricately, as her blood was her own, Langstom's serum increased her own abilities. Not her strength, or her speed, or even her animalistic side, but it made her more a Cheetah than ever before.
Walking down the corridors of the Cadmus lab, she held the keycard in her hands. Identification hadn't been that difficult to obtain, and it was a simple matter to get through the genetic locks.
All you needed was a helping hand.
She held the severed forearm of a Doctor who had previously worked here in her own hand, checking for any others she would have to "remove" from her work frame. To hold such a powerful weapon as a girl who could project warnings from inside such a heavily armored place would be to look a gift horse in the mouth.
"Do not be scared, little one." her voice was soft, and caring, with a slight purr to every word. She drew her fist back, smashing it repeatedly into the large metal door until it fell off it's frame.
"My Name is the Cheetah, you probably haven't heard of me. I'm very new to the hero business, and previous wearers of this mantle have coloured it black against the other heroes out there." She smiled, tossing the arm out of view before Ace could see it.
"I'm here to rescue you from this imprisonment, you do not deserve to be here, and I can help you break free of your torment." She smiled, removing the lab coat and draping it around Ace's shoulders. The kid would be eating from her hands in no time.
"I wield the ancient powers and rights of the Cheetah Tribe of Africa. I was a simple Anthropologist, working on rights and excavations of the people their when I was set upon by rebel insurgents, they kept me prisoner in their base, which happened to be a temple to the feline deities."
Cracking her knuckles, and flicking the claws free of their flesh moorings, she crouched down, carving her way through the wall of the room, and up towards the air vents that cross-crossed around the holding area.
"I escaped, but was badly injured by Gun fire." Minerva pointed towards her side, and cast a glance to her new "rescuee"
"My blood poured onto the Cheetah totem and I was reborn, with the power of every Cat on the planet, as well as some that we do not understand yet, and I dare not open for fear of repercussions, so I fight against injustice and more importantly human and Animal rights around the world. That is my Origin, Who are you?"
She pulled the metal plating away and pointed towards the air duct.
"Our Escape Route."

Ace was woken rudely by the loud smashes on her door. Her eyes snapped open and she sat up on her bed and saw a woman who, for lack of a better term, looked like a cheetah-lady.
She listened carefully to the woman, who she now knew to be known as ‘Cheetah’. She still didn’t trust anyone apart from Batman, and she wasn’t able to read this woman’s mind right now, so she wasn’t about to just trust her blindly.
Ace gripped the lab coat around herself and answered Cheetah’s question of who she was. She considered the question for a few moments before eventually deciding on an answer.
"Nobody..." she said, her voice low and soft, her timid nature coming through extremely clearly, which made her sound as though she where far away.
"Do you know Batman?" Ace asked. Right now, that was the only thing that she cared about, and it was the only way that Ace would even consider going with Cheetah. For all she knew, he could be one of Cadmus' tricks to 'test her loyalty' to them. And, since she was in Cadmus, they had put a psychic block around the building that prevented Ace from reading more than anyone's front-most thoughts.
Worse still, Ace worried that this person was somehow connected to the person that she was scared most of: The Joker, and planned to bring her to him for him to enact his revenge on her. Of course, this was merely Ace’s paranoia getting the better of her, but Ace genuinely believed that this could be a possibility.
Ace remained sat on her bed, refusing to move until she was sure that it would be safe too. She gave a quick glance to the uncovered air duct, but returned to watching Cheetah seconds later.

"Do I Know Batman?" She gave a small laugh, and padded silently towards the girl, letting off a slightly creepy grin.
"Between you and me, I know Batman very well, if you catch my drift? Lets say he has...a soft spot for Catwomen." She smiled again, a warmer smile this time, and offered the girl a hand.
"As soon as we're out of this place, we're going to get you to Batman, and we're going to make sure they you're alright, and never treated in this way again, and we're going to get you a name "Nobody"." She smiled again, and nodded towards the opening, taking the girls hand more forcefully.
"I don't mean to push you, but we're operating on a tight schedule here, girl, and we need to get out of here before the changing of the guards." She ushered her towards the opening, and quickly let a growl off under her breath.
"They're coming, girl. We need to get going now, I didn't have time to lay down any traps before I got here, so theres nothing to stop them bursting in."

Ace cocked her head to one side, looking at Cheetah. She still didn’t entirely trust her, and she really wanted to just wait until Batman arrived, so she knew she would be safe.
“Why didn’t Batman come?” she asked Cheetah, “I asked him to help me. He’ll come for me.
Ace clung onto the thought and hope that Batman would come to rescue her with all her might.
She looked around the room and saw the state it was in, as well as listening to Cheetah’s warning that the guards would be there soon.
As much as Ace wanted to leave Cadmus, she wanted to make sure that she would be safe as well and, in her mind, at least, the only way she could do that is if Batman came to save her, no-one else. Batman would be able to get her out, absolutely. With anyone else, Ace felt there was a high chance that she could get caught, brought back here and punished severely for trying to escape.
So, Ace remained sitting on her bed, shrinking away from the woman slightly. She knew that, if she remained where she was, she would not be punished as badly than if she was caught actually trying to escape.
((Hehe, I liked it!))

Minnerva repressed a growl, and turned away from the child. She was starting to get on the Cheetah's nerves. Manipulation was apparently not working very well, damn her for being so stubborn.
As the guards started shouting, Cheetah's ears pricked up. They would find the body that she'd mutilated, and she couldn't have that. This girl was far to powerful, and far to beneficial to her plans to leave her here.
"Listen to me, before I left to rescue you, I had a chance to see what they were doing to the kids before you." Her voice and demeanour changed, as she threw herself at the door to prevent the guards from bursting in, they were starting to level their energy weapons at the door.
"Super AIDS, Chemical compounds that made their Skin ache and melt off, grafting skin onto other parts of the body to see what happens. I know what Science is, I've studied it, I've got a degree in anthropology and trust me, THIS isn't science." Her body was thrown back as the guards tried to force the door with their shoulders.
Her claws, held and wrapped underneath the skin between her toes unfolded and dug into the ground, while she forced the door closed with her arms.
"Into the Air vent, girl! Go, I can only hold them for so long, and they're going to punish us both regardless of what happens here and now. You're a toy to them, an experimental hypothesis! GO!"
She yell loose a stiffled growl, and forced herself into the door again. She could feel the Tantu totem glowing in her side, calling to her, aching against her fur to be used.
"GOOO!"

"I know what they’ve been doing," Ace told her, "they brought me here when I was little."
Ace’s feeling that the girl was lying kept growing now. Ace did not think that this Cheetah-lady was going to take her to Batman.
You're a toy to them, an experimental hypothesis! GO!"
"I know I am," Ace explained, "but I know that they want me alive. They won’t kill me, and I know that Batman will come for me. I trust him."
Ace remained sitting firmly on her bed, prepared for anything that would happen. She had heard the abrupt change in tone in the woman’s voice when she first refused to move, so she could only imagine what would happen next.
Ace crossed her arms and put on her usual blank expression. She once again tried to read the woman’s mind to see if she was doing the right thing by refusing to go with her, but to no avail. Which was all the more reason why she shouldn’t go with her.
Ace heard the guards getting more successful in their attempts to get into the room, and squeezed her eyes shut, wishing that she would not be hurt.
All the while this was going on, Ace repeated in her head her assurances that Batman would come and rescue her himself.

"Batman isn't coming for you this time." She hissed under her breath, propping the door closed with her back, feet dug into the ground.
"You're aware that he doesn't exactly do breaking and entering into government facilities, and hes not about to come swinging in now if I don't bring you back to him, is he?" She snarled, mostly through the effort of trying to keep the door closed.
"Do you really want to be alive while they poke things into your brain? As soon as they're done with you, you're dead to them, and you will be aborted. Do you want your short life to end with an abstract on top of a paper?"
"Damnit girl, you're going to be the death of me." She tried to keep the door closed, but by this time, the guards where using the butts of thier guns to pry the door open, leaving Cheetah with less and less time to react.
"Please, this is my last time of asking. In fact, I'm begging you, please come with me." She upturned her eyebrows and pleaded with Ace, but she was fairly sure that the girl wasn't going to come with her. There wasn't enough time to knock her out and take her, so Minnerva was going to have to bolt, and get as far away as possible from the girl and the labs.
Damn.

"Batman isn't coming for you this time. You're aware that he doesn't exactly do breaking and entering into government facilities, and hes not about to come swinging in now if I don't bring you back to him, is he?"
Ace’s blank expression disappeared and was replaced with one of annoyance.
"Yes, he will!" she told Cheetah, her voice beginning to rise, "I know he will! I trust him!"
Ace stopped and took a few deep breaths. She needed to calm down, or she would risk her powers going off against her will. And she didn’t want that.
"And," she added, quietly now, "I don’t even know if I can trust you…"
Ever since that incident with The Joker, Ace had trusted nobody except for Batman. And, just because some woman who she’d never even seen before burst into Cadmus and promised to take her to her hero didn’t mean that she was going to start now.
Ace continued to stare at Cheetah, trying her best to read her mind to see if she was telling the truth or not. Ace would have hated herself if it turned out that Cheetah was telling the truth and was in fact planning on bringing her to Batman.
She heard footsteps running down the hallway outside, obviously a sign that more guards were coming to aid in the attempt to get into her room.
Ace stood up and walked into the corner of the room, her face to the wall. It was what she was supposed to do whenever a guard came into her room, and she figured that, if she did it now, she wouldn’t be punished as badly.

As the Guards try and force their way through, Minnerva looks at Ace pushing herself into the corner of the room. With very little thought about what she was doing, she rammed a piece of splintered wood up against the door, and pushed off the ground, summoning every piece of Cheetah strength she had, and channelling it into the form of a punch to the back of Ace's head.
That should be enough to knock her unconscious. As the guards burst into the room, Cheetah lept through the air, claws raking through the first guards face.
He dropped his gun, as she landed, whipping it up into her hands and shooting the lighting out, before dropping the gun. She twisted on the floor, leaping up towards the second guard, and playing with him, hitting him in the body armor, and planting her two feet on his chest, vaulting him off the floor and into the far wall.
The first guard was still clutching at his face in the dark. Minnerva took this opportunity to bite into it, tearing chunks away from the bone to his gurgling screams, terrifying the other guard.
She spun on her haunches, leaping and bounding off the wall, and landing on the second guards chest, pinning her body weight down on him, and growlling into his ear.
She flicked her wrist upwards, digging through the mans chin strap, and flicking another claw, the one running the length of her middle finger, vertically up his throat, cutting through the soft tissue and into his throat, severing his vocal chords.
The only sound now was a wet gurgling from both guards. Cheetah's eyes focused in the dark on the floundering first guard, as she pushed her claws through the second's eyes and into his brain, swirling them around until he stopped moving.
To make doubly sure, she twisted his neck in an unnatural way, snapping it cleanly. Finally, she lept and smashed the face of the first guard into the ground, before licking the brain and blood off her claws, and sliding Ace over her shoulder, moving, with deceptive speed and agility through the air vents and into the systems above.
She would find her way out from here.

As Ace continued to face the wall, she heard the sound of scraping and then felt a strike to the back of her head and her legs gave out from under her, making her crumple to the ground.
Although she was dangerously close to blacking out, Ace somehow managed to remain semi-conscious. Enough to see the dead bodies of the two guards when Cheetah flung her over her shoulder.
She felt that Cheetah was moving, bringing her along too, and saw the walls become metal and grow smaller. In the back of her mind, she thought that this must mean they were in the air vents. The same place in her mind also scolded her about being stupid enough to turn her back on someone she didn’t know. However, due to her slipping into becoming insentient, her conscious mind was unable to access these thoughts.
Ace gave a tiny whimper in dissent against Cheetah's abduction of her. She tried her best to hit Cheetah's back, but only had enough strength to lift up her arm, and then could do nothing but let it flop back down against Cheetah, causing less than what it would have if Ace were at her full strength, which was next to nothing in itself.
She could only hope that, wherever this woman was taking her, it would be better than Cadmus. Since Cheetah had forcibly taken her, Ace doubted that it was much better, but there was a slim chance that it was at least slightly better.
Before her mind went black, Ace once again sent out a psychic message to Batman, the 'loudest' she had sent yet.
"BATMAN! PLEASE HELP ME! I'M IN TROUBLE!"
And, just as she finished sending that, she was pulled into darkness and was out cold, unable to even give a small whine of protest.

Barbara's fist punched the top of the vent off as she pulled herself and her new found cargo from the tiny gap. She laid her prisoneer down on the roof gently, and looked around for any cameras or other security devices.
As she slowly stalked around the edges of the building, she looked down. Her transport would be here shortly, for both herself and for her Ace.
Her ace in the hole, or rather, out of the hole now. Barbara was tired of the constant battles she had been sucked into over her Career as a Super villain. Her plans were always runined, and her coverting of power had always ended badly.
This time she was determined to not fail, because this time, her desires were part of something larger than just her own. She wanted some peace, she wanted a chance to build a land away from Humanity for her visions and ideals that would help humanity mix with animals forever.
"You see, not that you can hear, humanity is very short sighted. Im tired of loosing all the time, and I'm tired of the environment loosing as well - Since i've got these powers I feel like I've...I've had almost a complete reversal of ideals. I used to want power, I wanted Wonder Woman's Lasso, I wanted to kill her and now..."
She lifted her Tantu totem up to the light, and examined the shiny metal surface.
"Now, I realise that all of that stuff is meaningless. What I want, and what I need are two totally different things. I want to usher in a new era, my little Ace."
She narrowed her eyes, her feline vision and hearing affording her greater senses than any other in the area. Her servants are coming to her.
"humanity is so narrow minded, my dear. They're locked into the old ways, and ignore the Genius' that exist in their midst's in favour of the more conventional idiots. Kirk Langstrom, Ras Al Ghul, all of them are ignored in favour of idiots like Luthor, who wrangle science as a form of power and not discovery."
She stands to her feet, scooping Ace up in her arms, and lifting her up.
"They use Science as a crutch ignoring the fact that science started off as a spiritual persuit. Something to explore your place in the universe, as much as the nuts and bolts of it."
The wing beats grew louder, as the Man-Bats swooped down, gripping Barbara and Ace around the shoulders, before lifting them both into the sky.
"Migration Routes, My Dears. Migration routes."
They were taking them both home; back to the plains of Africa.
